Leaving Raleigh better than we found it.

Currently serving my first term on the Raleigh City Council, representing District B. I proudly serve on the Safe,Vibrant, Healthy Communities committee and the Growth and Natural Resources committee, as well as the liaison to both the Parks Board and the Hispanic and Immigrant Affairs Board.

“I want Raleigh to be a place where my mom can age with dignity and where my daughter wants to raise her own family. I want Raleigh to work for her whether she becomes a barista or an anesthesiologist.”

Who Is Megan?

Megan moved to North Carolina with her multi-generational family for high school. Like so many families, even then, the promise of better jobs in the tech industry drew her family to the area. She had a great high school experience in Winston Salem, complete with awkward moments, marching band, prom committee and service organizations.

Megan attended UNC Chapel Hill on a Teaching Fellows scholarship. She fully embraced her time as a Tar Heel through (more) marching band, student government and campus leadership.

Upon graduating amidst a recession, Megan taught elementary school in a nearby town during the day and tutored at night. She moved to a small beach town with her now husband, where she continued teaching elementary school. But the burden of student debt meant that the ends barely met on their two teacher salaries and definitely didn’t leave extra to save for retirement or raising a family. Megan began waiting tables at night - each night after her shift, she’d drive past the ATM to deposit her tips then go straight to the student loan portal and make a payment in the same amount.

In the spring of 2016, Megan welcomed her daughter into the world. That’s what brought her family back to the Triangle. The promise of a bright future - full of support, community and resources. During that time, they lived with family. Megan had no paid family leave and went back to work at 6 weeks postpartum. She waited tables and worked at a dog spa, all while caring for an infant.

The next few years were a hustle! She continued to work a constellation of jobs that made the ends meet, working by day as a nanny and by night at a local factory.

Eventually, she worked her way up through the levels of leadership and managed several factory teams - even through a global pandemic! She now works in customer service.

In her free time, Megan shows up for her community. As a member of Mom’s Demand Action, Megan has called, emailed, and petitioned senators to enact reasonable gun legislation. As a member of her HOA, she connected neighbors in need with neighbors who can help. And as a member of the PTA, she’s worked on events that benefit the entire school.

All of these experiences led Megan to City Council. Megan is committed to doing this not just for her daughter, but for all the folks in Raleigh with stories just like this one. Our neighbors deserve to have a representative who understands what keeps them up at night, because she’s losing sleep over the same things. Megan won’t stop working on behalf of her neighbors until each and every family has housing that meets their needs, job opportunity, and a livable planet.

I can’t do this work without you. Are you able to help out?
